Special Services
Special Services is a specialized division within the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office
From forested mountains to the high desert… on lakes and rivers...from glaciers to mountain bike trails...given the abundant year-round recreational opportunities in Deschutes County, ample potential exists for calls and specialized law enforcement response “off the beaten path”. The Deschutes National Forest, which accounts for more than 1.5 million acres within Deschutes County, is traditionally one of the top ten most-used national forests in the United States.
Special Services encompasses:
• The five full-time paid personnel, and volunteer members, of the Search and Rescue (SAR) unit
• The seasonal Marine Patrol program and the four seasonal marine deputies
• The co-op Forest Patrol deputy position
• The OHV (Off Highway Vehicle) Patrol program and the three sesonal OHV deputies
• The Sheriff's Posse
• The Oregon State Snowmobile Association Snowmobile Patrol program, and
• Deschutes County Emergency Management
These specialized units work closely with U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management personnel, and value their continuing professional partnerships with area fire/medical agencies and AirLink Critical Care Transport. The Deschutes County Emergency Manager shares office space in the Special Services complex. Oversight starts with the Sheriff, goes through the Detective Captain and then to the Special Services Coordinator. To find out more, go to the Oregon State Sheriff's Association.
